This recording captures a live performance from the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra's 1978 tour in Vienna, a period during which conductor Evgeny Mravinsky was globally recognized as one of the most formidable interpreters of the 19th-century symphonic repertoire. The performance took place at the Musikverein, an acoustic setting that highlight's Mravinsky’s meticulous, disciplined approach to Brahms, favoring structural clarity and rigorous dynamic control over romantic indulgence.

The 2014 release by the Japanese label Altus is part of their effort to restore and issue high-quality archival tapes from Mravinsky’s international guest appearances. The design and remastering process were focused on capturing the unique tonal character of the Leningrad Philharmonic, noted for its lean string sound and powerful brass section. Upon release, the set was praised by classical music critics for preserving a specific, historical performance style that defined the Soviet-era symphonic tradition.
