Evgeny Mravinsky 1978 Wien Live - Schubert: Symphony No.8 / Shostakovich: Symphony No.5

This recording captures a legendary 1978 concert performance in Vienna, featuring Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Mravinsky, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor for five decades, was renowned for his disciplined, incisive approach to the repertoire, particularly the works of Shostakovich, whom he collaborated with extensively. The selection of Schubert’s 'Unfinished' Symphony paired with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony highlights the emotional depth and structural rigor that characterized Mravinsky's interpretations during the height of the Cold War era.

The 2014 Altus release was produced to preserve these historical archival tapes, which offer a high-fidelity look at the technical prowess of the Leningrad ensemble. By the time of the 1978 Vienna tour, Mravinsky’s reputation for uncompromising rehearsal standards and intense, austere delivery was firmly established globally. Critics and collectors have long viewed these concert recordings as definitive documents of his conducting style, often favoring the raw, unedited tension of his live performances over his studio recordings.
