Evgeny Svetlanov Conducts Russian Composers

Released in 2012 by Brilliant Classics, this comprehensive box set serves as a sprawling retrospective of the work of Evgeny Svetlanov, one of the most influential Russian conductors of the twentieth century. The collection was curated to gather a vast array of recordings originally produced during his long tenure as the music director of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, spanning repertoire from the late nineteenth century through the Soviet era.

The design of this collection reflects Brilliant Classics' standard approach to large-scale archival releases, prioritizing scholarly documentation and accessibility over elaborate packaging. By consolidating performances of composers like Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Myaskovsky into a single set, the label aimed to preserve Svetlanov's distinctively intense and emotive conducting style for a new generation of listeners, solidifying his legacy in the Western classical market long after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
