Where it came from
Released in 2017 by Da Vinci Classics, Explorations captures a specific pedagogical and artistic project led by trumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen. The album documents the results of an intuitive music masterclass held in San Quirico, Italy, reflecting Stockhausen's long-standing dedication to the methodologies of improvisational music. This collection serves as both a recording of a workshop and an exploration of the spontaneous, non-idiomatic musical dialogues that occur when students and mentors engage in Stockhausen's specific approach to intuitive composition.
The design and content of the release emphasize the communal and fluid nature of the workshop environment. By focusing on the interplay between the participants under Stockhausen's guidance, the album highlights the philosophy of listening and reacting in real-time that has defined the artist's career. It was produced to archive the creative outcomes of this intensive study, providing listeners with a window into the nuanced, delicate acoustic textures that characterized the residency in San Quirico.
