Where it came from
Released in 2017 on the Woodville Records label, Fish Tales serves as a notable entry in the catalog of Alan Barnes, a stalwart figure in the British jazz scene. The project highlights a collaborative octet format, bringing together the arrangements of Pat McCarthy and the vocal contributions of Josie Moon, aiming to capture a sophisticated, mid-century big band sensibility within a modern recording environment.
The album is characterized by its focus on tight, nuanced ensemble work that balances technical precision with a relaxed, swinging aesthetic. Barnes, known for his work on multiple woodwinds, sought to curate a sound that felt both nostalgic and fresh, receiving appreciative feedback from jazz critics who noted the record's clarity and the cohesive chemistry between the brass and rhythm sections.
