Provenance

Where it came from

This recording was produced in 2005 as part of a project to document the historic pipe organ located in the chapel of the former Sint-Jansgasthuis in Veurne, Belgium. The instrument itself, a notable example of 19th-century Flemish organ building by Pierre-Charles Van Peteghem, serves as the centerpiece for this collection of liturgical and organ repertoire. The recording captures the unique acoustic properties of the hospital chapel, providing a specialized sonic record of the instrument's restoration and tonal characteristics.

The album features the organist Jan Vermeire in collaboration with the Vlaams Radio Koor and conductor Hendrik Vanden Abeele. The production aimed to highlight the specific stylistic nuances of Flemish organ music, drawing on the collaborative efforts of local musicians and ensemble experts to showcase the organ's versatility. Upon its release by the label Vision-Air, the recording was primarily received by musicologists and pipe organ enthusiasts as a definitive reference for the Van Peteghem instrument, emphasizing historically informed performance practices within the specific architectural context of the Veurne chapel.
