Freedom Spirit

Released in 1997 on the artist's own TBK Records label, Freedom Spirit represents a distinct chapter in the career of Congolese musician Théo-Blaise Kounkou. Kounkou had already established himself as a significant figure in the Congolese rumba and soukous scene through his work in the 1970s and 80s, particularly as a member of bands like Orchestre Veve. This album serves as a reflection of his enduring influence, capturing the vibrant, percussion-heavy arrangements characteristic of his signature style as he continued to bridge traditional African rhythms with contemporary production sensibilities.

The album reflects a period where Kounkou focused on maintaining his independence as an artist, opting to release his work through his own imprint. The musical composition prioritizes the fluid guitar lines and interlocking polyrhythms that defined the soukous genre during that era. While the release remains a deep cut within the wider landscape of African popular music, it is regarded by enthusiasts of the genre as a testament to Kounkou's persistence and his commitment to the high-energy, dance-oriented sound that cemented his reputation among diaspora audiences in Europe and beyond.
