Where it came from
Released in 1997 by the Finnish label Jase, the Fresco CD captures a collection of chamber music compositions by Markus Fagerudd, a prominent figure in contemporary Finnish classical music. The album emerged during a period when the Jase label was actively documenting the output of Nordic composers who were blending traditional instrumentation with modern, often idiosyncratic, harmonic languages.
Fagerudd’s work on this record is characterized by his interest in textural density and the expressive potential of small ensembles. Critics of the time noted that the compositions aimed to balance intellectual rigor with an evocative, often atmospheric quality, reflecting the broader trend in late 20th-century Finnish music to look beyond the post-serialist avant-garde toward more accessible, listener-oriented sonic landscapes.
