From G to G

Released in 1992 on the Italian label Soul Note, From G to G marks a pivotal moment for clarinetist and saxophonist Gianluigi Trovesi. The album was recorded in Milan and serves as a centerpiece for the Gianluigi Trovesi Octet, showcasing a unique synthesis of traditional Italian folk motifs with sophisticated contemporary jazz arrangements. This period solidified Trovesi's reputation as a pioneer in blending Mediterranean melodic sensibilities with the rigorous, often avant-garde structures favored by the European jazz scene of the early nineties.

The album is noted for its playful yet intellectually demanding compositions, which balance technical virtuosity with a sense of historical inquiry. By integrating the folk music of his native Bergamo region into a modern jazz octet framework, Trovesi achieved a rare clarity in his artistic vision. Critics at the time praised the record for its sonic ingenuity and the cohesive performance of the octet, establishing it as a hallmark release within the Soul Note catalog, which was instrumental in documenting the evolution of creative improvised music in Europe.
