Gaëtane Chante / Zingt Barbara

Gaëtane Bouchez released Gaëtane Chante / Zingt Barbara in 2022 under the Harlekijn label, a boutique imprint famously established by the legendary Belgian chansonnier Jacques Brel. This collection serves as a dedicated tribute to the work of Barbara, the celebrated French singer-songwriter whose poetic and melancholic compositions remain pillars of the chanson tradition. By recording these tracks, Bouchez positioned herself within a lineage of interpreters who seek to preserve the emotional intensity and narrative depth inherent in the original mid-twentieth-century repertoire.

The production maintains a focus on vocal clarity and respectful arrangement, reflecting the label's long-standing commitment to high-quality lyrical storytelling. In designing the album, the intent was to bridge the gap between the original iconic performances and a contemporary audience, ensuring that the nuances of Barbara’s songbook were rendered with a fresh, yet reverent, sonic texture. Critics and listeners of the genre have noted the recording for its understated elegance and the performer's deliberate, measured approach to some of the most challenging material in the French songbook.
