Where it came from
Garden(s) was released in 2017 on Ayler Records, a label dedicated to the documentation of free jazz and improvised music. The project brings together three titans of the European avant-garde scene: saxophonist Daunik Lazro, trumpeter Jean-Luc Cappozzo, and percussionist Didier Lasserre. The album captures the trio’s deep exploratory synergy, emphasizing silence, space, and the textured interplay of acoustic instrumentation.
The design of the release maintains the aesthetic minimalist sensibility typical of the Ayler Records catalog, which prioritizes the raw essence of the performance over decorative packaging. The trio sought to create a sonic landscape that felt organic and evolving, akin to the growth patterns suggested by the title. Upon its release, the record was well-received within specialized jazz circles for its disciplined approach to improvisation and the high level of technical communication between the three instrumentalists.
