Where it came from
Released in 1991 by the Capriccio label, this recording showcases the Thomanerchor, the renowned boys' choir of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The collection was curated to honor the historical continuity of the role of Thomaskantor, a position famously held by Johann Sebastian Bach for 27 years. By gathering compositions from various individuals who served in this prestigious office, the album offers a focused exploration of the liturgical and musical traditions that defined the church's sound over several centuries.
The production sought to highlight the unique acoustic qualities and disciplined vocal training of the Thomanerchor, which has maintained a rigorous performance schedule for over 800 years. The curation and recording process aimed to capture the choir's authentic performance style, balancing the historical weight of the compositions with the technical fidelity of early 1990s digital recording. Upon release, it was regarded as an important contribution to the discography of German sacred music, celebrated for documenting the evolution of church music within its original institutional context.
