Where it came from
Released in 2011 by the German label Acousence Classics, this recording features the Grand Concerto for Four Tubas and Orchestra, composed by John Stevens. The work was commissioned to showcase the melodic versatility and technical agility of the tuba, an instrument often relegated to a supporting role in symphonic literature. It highlights the ensemble's ability to navigate complex interplay within a large-scale orchestral setting.
The performance features the Melton Tuba Quartett alongside the Duisburger Philharmoniker, conducted by Carl St. Clair. The recording was produced with an emphasis on high-fidelity audio, reflecting the label's commitment to capturing the resonant, deep registers of the tuba quartet against the lush, wide dynamic range of a professional philharmonic orchestra. It is regarded by low-brass enthusiasts as a definitive technical reference for modern tuba ensemble literature.
