Where it came from
Released in 2011 by Acousence Classics, this recording features the Melton Tuba Quartett in collaboration with the Duisburger Philharmoniker, conducted by Carl St. Clair. The project was conceived to showcase the versatility and technical range of the tuba as a chamber ensemble instrument, specifically highlighting compositions by John Stevens, a prominent composer and tubist known for expanding the solo and ensemble repertoire for low brass.
The album serves as a definitive exploration of the 'Grand Concerto for 4 Tubas,' a work that challenges traditional perceptions of the instrument by integrating the quartet into a symphonic setting. Produced with the high-fidelity standards characteristic of the Acousence label, the recording was met with appreciation among brass enthusiasts and academic circles for its precise intonation, complex harmonic textures, and the cohesive synergy between the quartet and the orchestra.
