Hare Rama Hare Krishna

The soundtrack for the 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna, composed by R.D. Burman, represents a landmark moment in Indian cinema, blending traditional Hindi film music with Western psychedelic and rock influences. The film, directed by and starring Dev Anand, was a critique of the hippie movement in Kathmandu, and Burman’s score served as a rhythmic backdrop to this counter-culture setting. The songs, particularly 'Dum Maro Dum', became cultural phenomena, revolutionizing the soundscape of Bollywood and establishing Burman as a pioneer of modern, experimental orchestration.

The 2001 CD release by Saregama served as a digital-era restoration of this iconic score, intended to preserve the clarity of Burman's intricate arrangements for a new generation of listeners. By the time of this reissue, the film had long achieved classic status, and the soundtrack was recognized as a pivotal work in the composer’s discography. Saregama, which holds the rights to the HMV/EMI back catalog in India, aimed to present the music in a format that honored the original 1971 recording sessions, maintaining the distinct vintage textures while providing the convenience of modern optical media.
