Where it came from
Released in 2005 by Elwood Muusik, this collaborative album brought together Hendrik Sal-Saller, the frontman of the iconic Estonian rock band Smilers, and the Estonian Dream Big Band. The project was designed to showcase Sal-Saller’s vocal versatility by placing his pop-rock sensibility within the sophisticated, brass-heavy arrangements characteristic of a traditional big band ensemble, effectively bridging the gap between mainstream Estonian rock and classic jazz-influenced instrumentation.
The album serves as a notable entry in the Estonian Dream Big Band’s discography, an institution known for its rotating roster of esteemed musicians and high-profile collaborations. Under the direction of the orchestra, the arrangements aimed to recontextualize Sal-Saller’s established hits and selected standards into a lush, dynamic soundscape. Upon its release, the record was well-received by listeners who appreciated the technical polish of the performance and the refreshing departure from Sal-Saller's usual guitar-driven studio sound.
