Where it came from
Released in 2015 by Svart Records, I serves as the debut studio album for The Exploding Eyes Orchestra, a project formed by members of the Finnish psychedelic rock band Jess and the Ancient Ones. The record was conceived as an exploration of the cinematic, dark, and orchestral side of 1970s progressive rock and occult-themed pop, leaning heavily into atmospheric arrangements and vintage production sensibilities.
The album was designed to capture a distinct retro-noir aesthetic, echoing the stylistic shifts that occurred within European underground scenes during the mid-70s. Upon its release, it received favorable attention from music critics who appreciated its departure from the heavier doom-metal influences of the members' primary band, highlighting the record's sophisticated use of vocal harmonies and organ-driven soundscapes.
