Where it came from
Vincenzo Bellini composed I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 1830, drawing upon Italian adaptations of the Romeo and Juliet story rather than strictly following Shakespeare. This opera is celebrated for its bel canto style, emphasizing long, melodic vocal lines and intense emotional expression. The work was conceived during a period when Bellini was cementing his reputation as a master of lyric drama, prioritizing vocal beauty and psychological depth over traditional rigid structures.
This specific 2010 EMI Classics release features a 1984 recording conducted by Riccardo Muti, leading the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The performance showcases a notable cast including Agnes Baltsa and Edita Gruberová, who were lauded for their technical precision and dramatic commitment. Muti’s conducting is often cited for its fidelity to Bellini’s original intentions, stripped of 19th-century performance accretions, which helped restore a sense of urgency and lean elegance to the score in the modern era.
