Where it came from
Vincenzo Bellini composed I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 1830, adapting the Romeo and Juliet story through an Italian bel canto lens. This specific 1998 recording, released under the Teldec label, features the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Donald Runnicles. The production was critically noted for its sensitive approach to Bellini's vocal writing, emphasizing the lyrical intensity required for the roles of Romeo and Giulietta.
The performance features mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore and soprano Hei-Kyung Hong, who were chosen to showcase the dramatic interplay central to the work's melancholic narrative. Runnicles’ interpretation was praised for its transparency and precision, moving away from overly ornate traditions to focus on the lean, melodic structure of Bellini’s orchestration. The recording is frequently cited by enthusiasts for providing a clear, balanced perspective on one of the composer's more intimate operatic tragedies.
