Where it came from
Released in 1998 on the RCA Victor label, 'I Remember Bill' serves as a sophisticated orchestral tribute to the legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans. Don Sebesky, a highly respected arranger and composer known for his work with CTI Records and his extensive background in jazz-fusion, crafted the album to honor Evans' distinct harmonic language and introspective melodic sensibility. The project represents a bridge between traditional jazz trio formats and lush, expansive symphonic arrangements, reflecting Sebesky's career-long interest in blending classical structures with jazz improvisation.
The album features a rotating cast of esteemed musicians, including pianists Fred Hersch and Joanne Brackeen, tasked with interpreting Evans' compositions and the stylistic nuances of his playing. Sebesky’s goal was not merely to replicate the famous trio recordings but to recontextualize them through dense, evocative orchestrations. Upon its release, it was received as a respectful and ambitious project, praised by critics for its tasteful handling of Evans' legacy and its ability to maintain the delicate emotional core of the original material without succumbing to over-production.
