Where it came from
Released in 1998 on the RCA Victor label, 'I Remember Bill' serves as a thoughtful tribute by jazz arranger and composer Don Sebesky to the legendary pianist Bill Evans. Sebesky, widely respected for his intricate orchestrations and long-standing association with Creed Taylor’s CTI Records, sought to revisit Evans's iconic musical legacy through a sophisticated, large-ensemble lens. The project functions as both a respectful homage to Evans's harmonic language and a showcase of Sebesky’s signature lush, nuanced arrangements.
The album features a rotating cast of accomplished jazz musicians who help interpret classic compositions associated with Evans. The design and production intent were focused on maintaining a balance between the introspective, intimate nature of Evans’s original piano work and the expansive possibilities of a jazz orchestra. Upon its release, it was received as a tasteful contribution to the canon of jazz tribute albums, noted for its high production values and Sebesky’s ability to translate delicate piano motifs into rich, multi-layered textures.
