Where it came from
Released in the late 1990s, I Remember Bill was conceived by jazz arranger and composer Don Sebesky as a heartfelt homage to the legendary pianist Bill Evans. Sebesky, known for his intricate orchestral arrangements and work with Creed Taylor at CTI Records, sought to capture the lyrical, introspective essence that defined Evans’s musical legacy. The project emerged from Sebesky’s personal reverence for the pianist’s harmonic language, aiming to translate those singular keyboard sensibilities into a larger ensemble format.
The production maintains a quiet, independent spirit, reflecting the intimate nature of the tribute rather than a commercial jazz release. The design and instrumentation were carefully curated to mirror the mood-driven, sophisticated aesthetic associated with Evans’s later trios. While the recording remains a niche item within Sebesky's extensive discography, it is regarded by jazz enthusiasts as a respectful and technically precise exploration of Evans's enduring influence on modern composition.
