Where it came from
Jazz Q, led by keyboardist Martin Kratochvíl, stands as a cornerstone of the Czechoslovakian jazz-rock scene of the 1970s. This 2007 CD release serves as a comprehensive reissue of their self-titled debut album, originally recorded during a period of significant creative ferment in Prague. The music emerged from a desire to blend technical jazz proficiency with the improvisational energy of rock, navigating the cultural constraints of the era while establishing a distinct avant-garde identity.
The album is widely regarded by critics as a foundational document of Eastern Bloc jazz fusion. Kratochvíl, known for his masterful command of the Hammond organ and later synthesizers, directed the ensemble to push structural boundaries. Upon its initial release, the work was lauded for its complexity and production quality, and the 2007 Supraphon reissue was curated to preserve these definitive sessions for a new generation of listeners, maintaining the integrity of the original soundscapes while providing archival clarity.
