Where it came from
Karitan Joulu, released by the Finnish label Ondine in 2002, emerged during a period of high international acclaim for Finnish soprano Karita Mattila. The album was conceived as a collection of traditional and beloved Finnish Christmas carols, aiming to showcase Mattila's operatic precision applied to the intimate, reflective atmosphere of Nordic holiday music. Its release was timed to capitalize on her status as one of the most sought-after vocalists in the classical world, providing a domestic festive offering that balanced technical mastery with seasonal warmth.
The album reflects the production values typical of Ondine’s high-fidelity classical recordings, favoring clear, natural acoustics that highlight the nuance of Mattila's voice. The design and presentation were intended to evoke a classic, timeless aesthetic, moving away from contemporary pop-oriented holiday packaging. Upon its release, the record was well-received by audiences in Finland and abroad as a refined contribution to the holiday canon, valued for its earnest interpretation of culturally significant songs rather than experimental arrangements.
