Klaus Nomi

Released in 2023 by Legacy, this CD edition serves as a remastered retrospective of Klaus Nomi's self-titled 1981 debut album. Nomi, a German singer known for his operatic voice and extraterrestrial stage persona, emerged from the late 1970s New York City underground scene, gaining initial notoriety for his performance with David Bowie on Saturday Night Live. The original album was a seminal work of the New Wave era, blending electronic pop, cabaret, and operatic artifice in a way that remains a defining example of late-twentieth-century avant-garde music.

The album's production was spearheaded by Man Parrish, who helped craft its distinctively synthesized and cold, mechanical soundscape. The visual presentation of Nomi, characterized by sharp-edged synthetic costumes and heavy makeup, was designed to evoke a stylized, futuristic persona that directly challenged the gritty punk aesthetic of the time. While Nomi's career was tragically cut short by the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, the 2023 Legacy release honors his design legacy by preserving the original aesthetic identity that transformed him into an enduring cult icon of queer performance art.
