Where it came from
La Favorita, an opera seria in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti, was originally premiered in Paris in 1840. The work remains a significant example of French grand opera, noted for its dramatic vocal demands and tragic narrative involving the conflict between religious duty and romantic obsession. The production featured here is a recording released by Nuova Era Internazionale, a label frequently associated with documenting live opera performances and archival recordings of Italian repertoire.
This specific recording features conductor Fabio Luisi leading a cast that includes Paolo Coni, Adelisa Tabiadon, and Giuseppe Morino. The performance highlights the label's commitment to capturing the nuances of Donizetti’s later style, which bridged the gap between bel canto traditions and the burgeoning requirements of mid-19th-century French stagecraft. While these recordings are primarily intended for study and historical appreciation, they serve as a testament to the persistent interest in preserving nuanced interpretations of Donizetti's expansive operatic canon.
