Where it came from
Released in 1997 by Buda Records, this collection captures the masterful hurdy-gurdy playing of Gaston Rivière. The album serves as a vital archival document of traditional French folk music, specifically showcasing the instrument's complex mechanical capabilities and its deep roots in rural musical culture. Buda Records has long been recognized for its dedication to ethnomusicology, and this release was curated to preserve the authentic techniques and repertoire of a master practitioner who carried on the heritage of the instrument into the late twentieth century.
The design of the album emphasizes the rustic and historic nature of the instrument, often featuring photography that highlights the woodcraft and intricate components of the hurdy-gurdy. The release was received by folk music enthusiasts and researchers as an important reference for the tonal range and rhythmic traditions associated with the instrument. It reflects a period of renewed academic and popular interest in preserving regional European folk arts before the transition into more modernized digital distribution formats.
