Laurent Plumhans | In Memoriam

In Memoriam was released in 2018 on the Cypres label, showcasing the contemporary compositional work of Belgian composer Laurent Plumhans. The project brings together the Quatuor MP4 string quartet and the ensemble Bow to explore themes of grief, reflection, and the persistence of memory through a minimalist and neo-classical lens. The work is deeply rooted in the traditions of European chamber music while pushing into modern soundscapes, reflecting the composer's focus on intimate, atmospheric resonance.

The album's design and conceptual framework lean into the aesthetic of the Cypres label, which is dedicated to promoting contemporary Belgian classical music. By pairing the technical precision of the Quatuor MP4 with the broader instrumental textures provided by Bow, Plumhans creates a sonic environment meant to evoke a sense of architectural space and emotional depth. The release was received as a contemplative addition to the contemporary Belgian repertoire, noted for its restrained emotionality and careful orchestration.
