Laminated Cakes

Laminated Cakes, released in 2017 on High Focus Records, represents a distinct collaboration between British underground hip-hop figures Jam Baxter and Ed Scissortongue. The project emerged from the prolific creative environment of the UK label, which has become a focal point for experimental and lyric-heavy rap. The production, largely handled by Chemo, provides a gritty and minimalist backdrop intended to complement the dense, surrealist, and often abstract wordplay characteristic of both artists.

The album was received as a stylistic bridge between the two rappers' individual outputs, blending Baxter's intricate, multisyllabic flow with Scissortongue's deliberate and atmospheric delivery. The design aesthetic of the release aligns with the label's signature visual identity, favoring stark, often unsettling imagery that mirrors the thematic preoccupation with dark urban narratives and psychological introspection. It remains a hallmark of the mid-2010s High Focus era, capturing a specific moment of cross-pollination within the London-based independent scene.
