L'Arlésienne-Suites Nos. 1 & 2 / Carmen-Suite = 〈アルルの女〉第1、2組曲〈カルメン〉組曲

Released in 1985 by Deutsche Grammophon, this recording features the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. It represents one of the final cycles of Bizet’s popular orchestral suites conducted by Karajan, who had a long-standing creative association with the Berlin Philharmonic spanning several decades. The recording captures the ensemble during a period when their collaborative sound was characterized by extreme precision and a polished, lush tonal quality.

The suites themselves are staples of the late-Romantic orchestral repertoire, originally derived from Bizet's incidental music for Daudet's play 'L'Arlésienne' and his masterwork opera 'Carmen'. Karajan’s approach to these pieces emphasizes dramatic sweep and rhythmic vitality, qualities that became synonymous with his interpretation of French orchestral music. Upon its release, the disc was received as a quintessential example of high-fidelity 1980s classical production, highlighting the clarity and depth that Deutsche Grammophon achieved in the early digital era.
