L'Art De Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli

This collection, released by Decca in 2020, serves as a retrospective tribute to the legendary Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. It curates a selection of his most profound interpretations of classical repertoire, specifically focusing on the works of Beethoven, Galuppi, and Scarlatti. The compilation was assembled to preserve the legacy of a performer celebrated for his extreme technical perfection, meticulous attention to tonal color, and an uncompromising approach to his craft that often led to infrequent public performances.

The design of the collection leans into a minimalist aesthetic characteristic of high-end archival classical releases, emphasizing the gravitas of Michelangeli’s artistry. By centering the listener's attention on the stark elegance of his piano tone, the release highlights the intellectual rigor he brought to the keyboard. Upon its arrival, the set was received as a definitive sonic portrait of the pianist’s middle-to-late period recordings, praised by critics for its careful remastering and its ability to capture the crystalline clarity that defined Michelangeli's approach to the baroque and romantic canon.
