Where it came from
Released in 2016 by [PIAS] Le Label, this collection serves as a retrospective reinterpretation of Alain Chamfort's extensive catalog. As an artist often celebrated for his sophisticated pop sensibilities and dandyish aesthetic, Chamfort sought to revitalize his past hits rather than simply compiling a standard greatest hits package. The project reflects his desire to bridge the gap between his 1970s and 1980s synth-pop roots and the contemporary soundscapes he was exploring in the 2010s.
The production process involved working with various collaborators to strip back or modernize the arrangements of iconic tracks like 'Manureva' and 'Bambou'. The intent was to capture a sense of timelessness, acknowledging the influence he held over the French pop landscape while demonstrating his refusal to remain static. The collection was generally well-received by French music critics, who noted that the reimagined versions successfully honored the original melodies while providing a fresh, introspective atmosphere consistent with the later phase of his career.
