Les 2 Sonates Pour Violon Et Piano

Released in 1986 on the Forlane label, this recording brings together pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha and violinist Gaëtane Prouvost to perform Sergei Prokofiev's two sonatas for violin and piano. These works, specifically the Sonata in F minor, Op. 80, and the Sonata in D major, Op. 94a, represent critical pillars of 20th-century chamber repertoire. The F minor sonata, in particular, is noted for its brooding, atmospheric intensity, which Prokofiev famously likened to the wind whistling in a graveyard, standing in sharp contrast to the more lyrical, pastoral character of the D major sonata.

The production captures a period in the 1980s when Forlane was active in documenting high-level chamber music collaborations, often focusing on European interpretative traditions. Abdel Rahman El Bacha, a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, provides a technically precise and nuanced accompaniment that complements Prouvost’s expressive approach to Prokofiev's demanding violin lines. Critics of the era generally appreciated the disc for its clarity and the performers' ability to navigate the complex emotional shifts inherent in Prokofiev's writing, securing its place as a reliable reference recording for students and enthusiasts of Soviet-era chamber music.
