Provenance

Where it came from

Les Bandits Manchots represents a posthumous collaboration centered on the work of the late French poet and songwriter Allain Leprest. Produced by EPM Musique, the project serves as a tribute to Leprest’s unique lyrical voice, utilizing previously unpublished poems discovered in his archives. By pairing these verses with the musical compositions and arrangements of François Lemonnier, the record seeks to preserve the biting, poetic realism that defined Leprest’s career during his active years in the French chanson scene.

The album reflects a trend in the French music industry of meticulously curating the literary estates of revered singer-songwriters. Lemonnier’s approach focuses on a stripped-back, atmosphere-driven musical accompaniment that highlights the meter and emotional gravity of the lyrics. Upon its 2025 release, it was received primarily by Leprest’s dedicated following and critics of the chanson genre as a poignant addition to his discography, aimed at ensuring his unreleased literary contributions remain accessible to a new generation of listeners.
