Llanto Por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías (De Federico García Lorca)

Released in 2010 by the Diputación Provincial de Granada, this recording features the legendary flamenco singer Enrique Morente interpreting Federico García Lorca’s famous 1935 elegy, Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. The project served as a tribute to the deep cultural and historical connection between the poet and Morente, who had dedicated much of his career to bridging the gap between traditional flamenco and contemporary poetry. It emerged as a scholarly and artistic endeavor to document Morente's powerful, avant-garde approach to this seminal work of Spanish literature.

The recording is characterized by Morente’s idiosyncratic style, which eschews pure orthodox flamenco in favor of a dramatic, almost theatrical delivery that highlights the visceral grief and rhythmic intensity of Lorca's poetry. Designed as a commemorative release, it emphasizes the gravity of the source material—the death of the bullfighter Sánchez Mejías—and was received by critics as a poignant late-career testament to Morente's ability to revitalize the classical canon through deep emotional resonance and unconventional vocal phrasing.
