Where it came from
Los Van Van, founded by bassist Juan Formell in 1969, stands as the most influential ensemble in modern Cuban music. By the time this 2003 compilation was released via Orfeon Videovox, the band had spent decades perfecting 'songo,' a rhythm that blends traditional son cubano with funk, rock, and jazz. This specific release functions as a career retrospective, gathering the high-energy, dance-oriented tracks that allowed the group to survive and evolve through shifting political and cultural landscapes in Havana.
The band's design philosophy historically mirrored their music: a synthesis of classic Afro-Cuban instrumentation and contemporary studio technology. Formell and his arrangers aimed for a sound that could dominate international festival stages while remaining deeply grounded in the dance halls of Cuba. This collection was met with appreciation by global world music audiences, serving as a accessible entry point for listeners seeking a comprehensive overview of the group's mid-career output and signature rhythmic innovation.
