Lucrezia Borgia

This 1994 release of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia features the iconic soprano Joan Sutherland in one of her signature roles, captured under the baton of her husband and longtime collaborator, Richard Bonynge. The recording stems from a period when Sutherland was widely credited with spearheading the bel canto revival, bringing neglected works of the nineteenth century back to the forefront of the operatic canon. Her interpretation of the titular character is celebrated for balancing technical vocal agility with the intense dramatic gravitas required by Donizetti’s score.

The recording serves as a testament to the partnership between Sutherland and Bonynge, who meticulously researched and restored scores to showcase the soprano's exceptional range and coloratura precision. By the time this edition was released by Serenissima, Sutherland had already solidified her legacy as one of the definitive interpreters of the role, having performed it to great acclaim across the world’s major opera houses. The production is regarded by critics as a benchmark for authentic bel canto style, emphasizing the fluid phrasing and emotional depth that defined Sutherland’s storied career.
