Where it came from
The Madagascar All Stars project was conceived as a collaborative supergroup, uniting some of the most influential musicians from Madagascar to showcase the island's diverse musical heritage on an international stage. Produced by LATERIT Productions and released in 2014, the album serves as a culmination of a long-standing initiative to bring together legends like Erick Manana, Dama Mahaleo, and Justin Vali to blend their unique regional styles into a cohesive, celebratory sound.
The album reflects a deliberate effort to synthesize the varied traditions of Malagasy folk, including the intricate valiha playing of Justin Vali and the soulful, poetic songwriting of Dama Mahaleo. The design and production aimed to maintain the raw, acoustic integrity of these artists while arranging the compositions to appeal to a global world-music audience. Upon its release, it was well-received by cultural critics as a vital document of Madagascar's modern musical identity and a masterful intersection of different generations of the nation's premier talent.
