Where it came from
Released in the late 1970s on the French label Pastels, 'Sempre' captures the Italian jazz pianist Marco Di Marco during a highly creative period of his career. Recorded in New York City, the album reflects the international exchange of jazz musicians who converged in the city to blend the post-bop sensibilities of the American scene with European harmonic sensibilities. It stands as a document of Di Marco’s technical fluency and his ability to lead a trio through sophisticated, melodic improvisation.
The album is noted for its clean, intimate production, which emphasizes the interplay between the piano, double bass, and drums. While Di Marco is not a household name, this release is frequently sought after by jazz enthusiasts for its authentic, unadorned aesthetic. The cover design and arrangements reflect the minimalist, sophisticated trends of independent European jazz labels from that era, prioritizing the music's atmospheric quality over commercial packaging.
