Maria Di Rohan

Maria di Rohan was originally composed by Gaetano Donizetti in 1843, representing a mature period in the composer's career where he moved toward a more dramatic and sophisticated musical language. This 1988 recording by the Nuova Era label was produced during a significant resurgence of interest in Donizetti's lesser-performed bel canto works, capturing a live performance by the Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia under the baton of Massimo De Bernart.

The production features soprano Mariana Nicolesco in the title role, an artist widely noted for her interpretative depth within the bel canto repertoire. The release was intended to provide a high-quality document of this neglected score, aiming to highlight the dramatic tension and vocal demands characteristic of late-period Donizetti. Critically, the recording was well-regarded for bringing visibility to a work that had long been overshadowed by the composer's more famous tragedies, serving as a cornerstone for listeners exploring the fringes of the 19th-century Italian operatic canon.
