Where it came from
Released in 2009 on the specialized German label Gruenrekorder, this album is a work of bioacoustics and environmental sound art curated by marine biologist Heike Vester. It emerged from Vester's extensive field research in the waters of Lofoten and Vesterålen, Norway, aimed at documenting the underwater soundscapes of the region's diverse whale and fish populations. The collection serves as both a scientific record and an immersive auditory experience, highlighting the complex vocalizations of orcas, sperm whales, and long-finned pilot whales.
The production philosophy behind the album reflects the label's commitment to field recording as a means of ecological advocacy. By capturing the natural clicks, whistles, and pulse calls of these marine mammals, Vester intended to provide listeners with a direct sonic connection to a fragile habitat often affected by industrial noise. The work is widely regarded in the sound art community as a poignant example of acoustic ecology, praised for its clarity and the intimate, unfiltered perspective it offers into the hidden social lives of Arctic sea life.
