Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2016 by Coviello Classics, this recording presents a unique interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion. The project was conceived as an experimental, cross-disciplinary performance titled Markus - Passion, led by German actor Lars Eidinger in collaboration with his sister, Ulrike Eidinger, and a dedicated ensemble of musicians including the Wunderkammer Orchestra.

The production sought to strip away traditional liturgical formality in favor of a raw, contemporary, and deeply personal theatrical experience. By blending classical vocal performance with minimalist arrangements and Eidinger’s dramatic recitation, the creators aimed to humanize the liturgical narrative. The resulting album captures a performance that prioritizes emotional intimacy and unconventional delivery over historically informed performance standards, garnering attention for its bold departure from traditional sacred music conventions.
