Markuspassion

The Markuspassion by Johann Georg Künstel represents a significant contribution to the rediscovery of 17th-century German sacred music. Released in 2019 by the Christophorus label, this recording brings to light a work that had largely faded from the common repertoire. The passion was reconstructed and performed by the Ensemble Polyharmonique and the period-instrument group Barockorchester L'Arpa Festante, who sought to capture the austerity and devotional intensity inherent in early baroque liturgical settings.

The production is notable for its meticulous attention to historical performance practice, reflecting the ongoing scholarly effort to revitalize works from the late 1600s. The musical direction emphasizes the emotional gravity of the text, utilizing the specific timbres of period instruments to mirror the solemnity of the Passion narrative. Upon its release, the recording was praised by music critics for its technical precision and the ensemble's ability to navigate the complex counterpoint of Künstel's composition, providing a modern audience with a rare glimpse into the period's regional sacred traditions.
