Where it came from
The Markus-Passion, or St. Mark Passion (BWV 247), represents one of the most intriguing enigmas in Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred canon. While the original score was largely lost to history, this 1997 Decca release reflects a scholarly and artistic effort to reconstruct the work. The performance utilizes the surviving libretto—penned by Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander—and draws upon other movements by Bach, such as those from his Trauer-Ode, to recreate what many scholars believe to be the original musical structure.
Led by the esteemed tenor and conductor Peter Schreier, the recording features the Favorit- und Capellchor Leipzig and the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum. Schreier was widely respected for his profound knowledge of Bach's vocal works, and his direction here emphasizes clarity and liturgical reverence. Upon its release, this recording was noted for its commitment to historical musicology, providing listeners with a thoughtful, if speculative, window into a masterpiece that had remained silent for centuries.
