Provenance

Where it came from

The Markus-Passion, or St. Mark Passion (BWV 247), remains one of the most enigmatic works attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. While the original music is lost, the libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander, survives. This 2010 recording by the Kölner Akademie under Michael Willens represents a scholarly attempt to reconstruct the work by borrowing music from Bach's other compositions, a common practice in musicology intended to approximate the sound and structure of the missing original.

Released by the Carus label, this production features the vocal ensemble Amarcord and actor Dominique Horwitz as the Evangelist. The design and direction of this project reflect a modern effort to bridge the gap between historical musicology and theatrical performance. By utilizing the specific sound palette of the Kölner Akademie, the recording aimed to provide a cohesive, contemplative listening experience that respects the liturgical weight of Bach’s sacred works while addressing the inherent challenges of reconstructing a lost masterpiece.
