Where it came from
Released in 2013 on the Intuition Records label, this album represents a collaborative project between the acclaimed German trumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen and the Dutch Metropole Orkest. The collaboration emerged from a desire to blend Stockhausen’s lyrical, jazz-inflected improvisational style with the expansive, symphonic textures that the Metropole Orkest is renowned for, particularly under the guidance of conductor Jules Buckley.
The album reflects a trend of cross-genre exploration within contemporary European jazz, seeking to bridge the gap between chamber orchestration and modern experimental improvisation. The production emphasizes clarity and atmosphere, aiming to showcase the delicate interplay between the brass soloist and the full orchestral ensemble. Critical reception at the time highlighted the record's sophisticated arrangements and the seamless integration of Stockhausen’s distinctively fluid trumpet tone within the lush, varied backdrop of the orchestra.
