Where it came from
The 1998 release Musik Ur Nils Holgersson serves as the official soundtrack accompaniment to the theatrical production of the same name, staged by the Swedish national touring theater company, Riksteatern. This adaptation draws upon Selma Lagerlöf’s 1906 classic, 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils,' a foundational piece of Swedish literature that chronicles a boy's transformative journey across the country on the back of a goose. The production was conceived to bring the folk-inspired fantasy to a modern stage, utilizing music as a central narrative vehicle to evoke the geographic and emotional landscapes of Sweden.
The compositions for this production reflect a blend of contemporary theater scoring and traditional Swedish folk sensibilities, aimed at capturing the whimsical yet melancholic tone of the original tale. By the late 1990s, Riksteatern was heavily invested in revitalizing classic stories for family audiences, and this soundtrack was curated to function both as an essential element of the live performance and as a standalone listening experience. It remains a notable documentation of late-90s Swedish stage music, prized by collectors of regional theatrical archives and enthusiasts of the Nils Holgersson cultural phenomenon.
