Where it came from
Released in 2000 by the independent label Ars Produktion, this recording features the Kölner Kantorei, a respected German choral ensemble led by conductor Volker Hempfling. The album was compiled as a specialized collection of traditional German Advent music, centering on the titular track 'Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging,' a centuries-old hymn dating back to the 19th century that has deep roots in regional folk and sacred music traditions.
The production sought to capture an authentic, liturgical atmosphere suited for the meditative season of Advent. By utilizing the acoustic clarity for which Ars Produktion is known, Hempfling aimed to highlight the polyphonic precision of his choir. Upon release, the album found a stable place within the niche market of European choral music, favored by listeners seeking high-fidelity recordings of classical seasonal repertoire rather than commercial arrangements.
