Where it came from
Released in 2017 by PASCHENrecords, this recording of the 'Nach Markus-Passion' serves as a scholarly and artistic reconstruction of a work that Johann Sebastian Bach likely compiled for Good Friday services in 1731. Because the original music for the Markus-Passion was lost to history, this project represents a continuing effort by musicologists and performers to restore the piece by pairing the surviving libretto—written by Christian Friedrich Henrici, known as Picander—with movements from Bach’s other cantatas and oratorios that fit the theological and musical framework of the original score.
The production features the Collegium Vocale Leipzig and the Merseburger Hofmusik under the direction of Michael Schönheit, with pianist Steffen Schleiermacher contributing to the realization. The ensemble sought to ground the performance in historical performance practice while addressing the logistical challenges of reconstructing a fragmented masterwork. Upon its release, the recording was recognized for its contribution to the niche field of Bach reconstruction, providing listeners with a cohesive, albeit speculative, look at a Passion cycle that had remained a point of intrigue for Bach scholars for centuries.
