Where it came from
Released in 2017, O Menestrel e o Sertãomundo serves as a significant symphonic reimagining of the singular musical universe created by Elomar Figueira de Mello. Elomar, a reclusive and highly influential figure in Brazilian folk music, is known for his intricate use of medieval-inspired language and the stark, poetic imagery of the Bahian sertão. This project sought to elevate his minimalist, guitar-driven compositions by integrating them with the expansive arrangements of the Orquestra Sinfônica Nacional, conducted by Tobias Volkmann.
The production process focused on preserving the raw, narrative intensity of Elomar's work while layering it with orchestral textures that echo the grandeur of the landscape he describes. The collaboration was received as a bridge between high-art classical instrumentation and the deep-rooted oral traditions of the Brazilian interior. By framing Elomar's 'sertãomundo' through a symphonic lens, the recording highlights the composer's role as a modern-day troubadour, successfully documenting his complex arrangements for a broader audience.
